Photo of the Week: Feb 27, 2012

The alpine turf glows in the late afternoon sun on Froze to Death Plateau as Mt. Hague stands sentinel over Mystic Lake across the valley.

This is one of my favorite memories from a trip I took a few summers ago with my then twelve-year-old son across the plateau to catch a glimpse of Granite Peak, Montana’s highest mountain.  On that occasion, we arose early from our camp at Mystic Lake and hiked across the plateau, then all the way back out to our car, making for a grueling seventeen-mile day.

I remember we were both dog-tired on the late night car ride home, but seeing Granite and experiencing the views from the plateau fueled our motivation to come back the following summer to climb the peak.  One of these days, I’ll get around to writing a story about that trip…
