Photo of the Week: August 6, 2012

Alpine avens carpeting the tundra awash in sunshine on a lazy afternoon on “Montana’s Rooftop,” the expansive Beartooth Plateau.

Summer lasts only a few short weeks in this alpine setting, one of the highest contiguous land masses in North America.  Snow often covers these mountains until mid-July, and typically returns again in significant amounts by September.  In fact, the abundance of annual snowfall here created once-mighty glaciers, whose evidence can be appreciated by the deeply carved, U-shaped valleys seen in this photo.
