The Windmills

In the middle of nowhere along State Hwy 12 north of the Crazy Mountains stands an array of windmills that just begs to be photographed.  On this day the wind happened to be calm, so the blades were still.  I overlaid multiple exposures from singe RAW images in post-production to bring out the subtle drama and dynamic range of the sky features.

Weatherman Draw – May 4, Part One

This gallery is a selection I assembled from an austere day trip hiking around the Weatherman Draw area this past weekend.  Foggy, blank skies and irregular sandstone features lent themselves to some interesting black and white landscapes.  The diffuse light was also perfect for capturing many of the freshly blooming prairie wildflowers that are beginning to pop up everywhere this time of year.   Those photos can be viewed in Part Two of this post.

Out Came the Sun

Black and white captures from a recent snowshoe outing atop the Billings Rimrocks.

Though the city of Billings is situated in the ‘banana belt’ of south-central Montana, this winter has seen record snowfall and temps dipping below zero for days on end, leaving this blogger locked inside with a case of cabin fever and no end of winter in sight.

Then, out came the sun.  On this lucky afternoon, the clouds parted after a morning snowstorm, casting gorgeous shadows and a fun respite kicking through fluffy, untouched powder.

The Fremont River flows peacefully along its grassy banks beneath towering Navajo sandstone bluffs in Capitol Reef National Park.

This river is was a source of irrigation water that made farming possible here. The small Mormon community of nearby Fruita depended primarily on fruit sales for income, but they also raised other crops, such as vegetables, alfalfa, and sorghum.
